I. LOVE. CHEVRON!
[Such a fad, I'm fully aware, but I am in love.]
I have had a deep love/hate relationship with all of the walls that I have painted, and this one was definitely no exception. Before I started, I watched about twenty YouTube videos of people who basically just figured out what worked for them... lots of mathy math people who like numbers and perfection. I tried going with it, trying to fool myself into thinking I could actually make every line perfect. Okay, seriously? I am a stay at home mom, basically I have an hour and a half a day to do any kind of painting. So here we go... I went about 3 points on the chevron wall and said a few choice words after the YouTube videos were WRONG [hehe]. I then tossed the level, said a prayer, and started free handing. Here's how it went......
First thing's first. I had to decide how many Chevron stripes I wanted. Odd numbers are more aesthetically pleasing, so I settled with 5. After taking the height of my wall, 94", I divided by 5, which gave me roughly 18" for the height of each stripe. I marked my wall every 18" with a pencil to use as a guide for my taping. I started at the bottom of my wall, taping from the top of the first pencil mark, going diagonally downward. Tape at the bottom, and bring it back up at the same-ish angle and up to the same height, and tape. Keep doing this until you get to the end of the wall. When you get to the end of your wall, be sure that you bring your last piece of tape back up to the top of the next piece of tape that you are using as your guide. {I am so sorry if this is more confusing than helpful... I am doing my best to break it down, I promise!}
The next taping line will start from the bottom of the next mark on the wall, and bring it down as close to the same angle and length as your first one. I used each previous piece of tape as my guide for the next. I put little pieces of broken off tape in the space that was to remain white, so there was no mistaking where the paint was to go!
Three stripes in and my little helper woke up from her nap... woohoo!
As you can see, I wasn't lying that I didn't have a guide! The taping looks atrocious but I discovered that with chevron, and in a playroom, quirk is key. Perfection is not what I strive for, and it is not something I want to teach Claire. I want her to see beauty in "imperfection" and be more interested in the character and story of something rather than how it looks at first sight. Plus, when striving for perfection, I don't think it would be half as fun!
All taped up and ready for some paint! [I was sure to make clean edges where the tape ends meet]
I chose a pale yellow, I just thought it was sweet and inviting. Plus, I like yellow and red together and I bought a red Ikea hanging shelf to go on that wall :)
She's all painted! Now for the waiting game........... My least favorite part is watching the paint dry!
Voila! Absolutely "perfect"! I love the unevenness in this wall, I think it is SO fun!
I will post better pictures when I am able to use a better camera :) These pictures just don't do this room justice. It is precious.
Hopefully you will want to add some quirk to your home now, too! :)

I love your blog Hilery! I love your kindness to not being perfect. I have thrown so many "crafts" away, after hours working on them and many dollars spent, because they don't look store bought and perfect. Just reading the first few posts on your blog made me realize why I love crafting and re-vamping old things. It's not about perfection! Your doing such an amazing job! I literally went through your whole instagram yesterday trying to convince my boyfriend to paint our wall in a pattern(chevron). It has not worked yet, but I am optimistic! I look forward to your posts about cheap knick knacks made anew and your PRECIOUS child!
ReplyDeleteMel, I have thrown away soooo many crafting projects for the same reason! I just got sick of it and started loving the "mistakes" I had made, because I refused to waste another dollar! Haha, besides, we are our own worst critics. No one else will even notice....
ReplyDeletewhen i move to okinawa you will travel out there to help me decorate right?!!? :) lol. it looks great hilery!!
